Rapid City window replacement cost vs. the national average
On paper, Rapid City looks a little cheaper than the country as a whole. EcoWatch's Rapid City average of about $600 per window sits below Fixr's national average of about $800, and the local range ($200–$1,200) starts lower. The EcoWatch figure is from January 2025, so treat it as a rough benchmark, not today's price.
In practice, the house matters more than the ZIP code. A 1950s ranch near Ellsworth with standard openings and solid frames is a quick job. A 1970s split-level on the west side with hail-dented aluminum wraps, a rotted sill on the north wall and lead paint on the trim is a much bigger one, even with identical windows. A cabin above Hill City with odd sizes and a steep lot adds access time on top of that.
The climate also nudges people toward better glass. With about 7,252 heating degree days a year and a January average low of 12.7°F, many Black Hills homeowners ask about triple pane and low U-factors, which raises the unit price.
What drives window replacement cost in the Black Hills
- Material. Vinyl is usually the lowest per unit, fiberglass the middle to upper range, and wood or clad-wood the highest. See vinyl and fiberglass, wood and composite.
- Triple-pane glass. A third pane, low-E coatings and gas fill add to the unit price and weight. In Zone 6A it is often worth pricing both ways. See energy-efficient windows.
- Size and style. Large picture windows, sliders and casements price differently, and oversized or custom shapes cost more than standard rectangles. Bay and bow units are a separate price class.
- Story and access. Second-story windows, walkout basements on hillside lots and tight side yards mean ladders, staging and more labor time.
- Full-frame vs. insert. Full-frame replacement strips the old window down to the rough opening, so it costs more and takes longer. Insert replacement sets a new window inside the existing frame and is usually less work when the frame is square, dry and solid.
- Rot and hidden damage. Soft sills or water-damaged framing found during removal is usually priced as extra. Ask each installer how they handle it before you sign.
- Lead-safe work. In pre-1978 homes, federal rules require an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm and containment, cleanup and verification steps that add time.
- Egress digging. A new basement egress window means cutting the foundation, excavating and setting a well. The window is the small part of that bill. See egress and basement windows.
- Hail scope. After a storm, the job may include screens, aluminum wraps and capping or trim, and the insurer's scope may not match what an installer recommends. See hail damage window replacement.
Window replacement cost calculator
A planning range from national published figures. It is not a quote.
Typical range: $5,000–$11,000
This is a planning figure from national published ranges (Fixr, Jan 2026). It excludes trim and interior repairs, rot, lead-safe work practices, egress excavation, permits and insurance scope after hail. Black Hills quotes vary, sometimes well outside this range.
Honest ways to keep the cost down
- Use fewer styles. One window line and a few standard styles across the house is usually priced better than a mix of shapes, colors and hardware.
- Phase the job by elevation. Replace the worst side first, often the north wall that frosts up or the west wall that takes the hail and afternoon sun, then do the rest later in the same line so they match.
- Repair where the window is sound. A fogged insulated glass unit can often be replaced on its own for $150–$600 (Fixr, Aug 2025). See window repair and foggy glass and foggy window repair vs. replace.
- Use insert replacement where frames are good. If the existing frames are square, dry and solid, insert installation is usually less work than full-frame.
- Get more than one written quote. Compare the same items: window line, glass package, installation method, trim, disposal, lead-safe work and warranty terms. See how to compare window replacement quotes.
Not a way to save in 2026: tax credits and rebates. The federal 25C credit ended for windows installed after December 31, 2025. South Dakota declined the federal IRA home-energy rebates, and Black Hills Energy lists no window rebate. No window is "tax-credit eligible" now. Details in the 2026 South Dakota window tax credit and rebate guide.
If you sign at your kitchen table
Sign a window contract at home and South Dakota law (SDCL 37-24-5.1 and following) lets you cancel until midnight of the third business day. The seller should give you a written cancellation notice. A "sign today" price is a red flag, not a deal.
Window replacement cost FAQ
What is the average window replacement cost per window in Rapid City?
EcoWatch put Rapid City at about $200 to $1,200 per window, averaging near $600 (Jan 2025). Fixr's national average is about $800 per window, with a typical range of $450 to $1,200 (Jan 2026). These are published ranges, not quotes. Black Hills installers price each house after measuring the openings.
How much does it cost to replace every window in a house?
Fixr (Jan 2026) puts a one-story house with 10 to 15 windows at about $8,000 to $12,000 and a two-story house with 15 to 30 windows at about $12,000 to $24,000. Bay or bow units, egress windows, rot repair and lead-safe work on pre-1978 homes add to that total.
Are triple-pane windows worth the extra cost in the Black Hills?
Often, for the north and west sides of a house in a Zone 6A climate with about 174 freezing nights a year. Triple pane typically adds to the unit price and weight. The Black Hills are almost certainly in ENERGY STAR's Northern zone (U-factor 0.22 or lower), so check the label and compare U-factors, not pane counts alone.
Does insurance pay for hail-damaged windows?
Sometimes, but nobody can promise it. What a policy pays depends on actual cash value or replacement cost coverage, your wind/hail deductible and the adjuster's scope. Read your policy and call your agent. Rapid City Window Pros does not handle or negotiate claims, and an installer who offers to cover your deductible is a red flag.
Why are quotes for the same windows so different?
Quotes differ in the window line, glass package, full-frame versus insert installation, trim and capping, how rot is priced, lead-safe practices, permit work, disposal and warranty terms. Get every quote in writing and compare those items line by line rather than only the total at the bottom.
