What hail does to windows, and who this page is for
Golf-ball hail or bigger can crack or shatter glass. Smaller stones can still dent aluminum wraps, split vinyl corners and tear screens. Seal damage is harder to see: a window that looks fine in July can fog between the panes months later.
This page is for homeowners who just had a storm roll through, or who suspect an older one did more than it seemed. Rapid City Window Pros is a free matching service, not a window company. We don't inspect homes and we don't handle, negotiate or adjust insurance claims. You describe the damage once, and independent local window companies reply with quotes.
Black Hills hail: the storms people still talk about
A few of the bigger hail events on record:
| Date | What fell | Where |
|---|---|---|
| July 27, 2015 | Hail up to 3.5 in.; baseball-size reported in Hill City | NE Wyoming and western SD |
| Aug 14, 2017 | About 1.5–1.75 in., per storm reports | West and southwest Rapid City, Black Hawk, Piedmont |
| July 10, 2020 | 3–3.25 in. stones (National Weather Service) | Downtown and southwest Rapid City |
| Aug 18, 2025 | Hail up to about 3 in. | South and southwest Rapid City toward Rockerville |
| June 22, 2026 | Golf-ball hail | West side of Rapid City |
If your house went through any of these, look again at the side that faced the storm. For a printable step-by-step, read what to do about hail-damaged windows.
How to inspect your windows after a hailstorm
Once the storm has passed, walk every side of the house. Stay off a wet roof and use binoculars for second-story windows.
- Glass. Look for cracks, star breaks and chips. A crack in one pane of a double-pane unit still means the sealed unit has failed.
- Vinyl frames and sashes. Check corners and sills for splits, chips or white stress marks.
- Aluminum wraps and cladding. Dents show best with low sun or a flashlight held flat to the surface.
- Screens. Holes, stretched mesh and bent frames are a good marker of how hard the hail hit.
- Seals. Note any haze between panes now and check again over the next few months.
- Water. Check interior sills and drywall for wet spots after the next rain.
- Nearby clues. Dented gutters, siding or a grill lid show the size and direction of the hail.
Document everything before anything is fixed
Take photos before cleanup and before any temporary repair.
- A wide shot of each side of the house, then a medium shot of each damaged window.
- Close-ups of every crack, dent and tear, with a coin or tape measure in the frame for scale.
- A few hailstones next to a ruler, photographed soon after the storm before they melt.
- A list of each window, what's damaged and the storm date.
- Receipts for tarps, plywood, tape or emergency glass work. Keep the damaged screens if you can.
Temporary board-up that won't make things worse
Close a broken opening the same day. Wear gloves and eye protection. Tape cracked glass in an X with packing tape. Cover open holes from outside with plywood or heavy plastic, fastened into the trim rather than the sash. Vacuum up glass and keep kids and pets away. Many policies expect reasonable steps to prevent more damage, so photograph the board-up too.
Hail and insurance: the basics
We don't handle, negotiate or adjust insurance claims, and nobody can promise what a policy will pay. Understand your own coverage before you talk to anyone selling windows.
- Read your declarations page. Check whether the dwelling is covered at actual cash value (ACV, which subtracts depreciation) or replacement cost, and whether you have a separate wind/hail deductible.
- Call your agent. Ask how a window claim works on your policy and whether a small claim makes sense against your deductible. A local agent told KOTA in June 2026 that a claim filed but not paid can stay on your record for about five years.
- Know the timing rule. South Dakota law requires insurers to acknowledge and act on claim communications within 30 days (SDCL 58-33-67).
- You pick the contractor. The same agent noted that an insurer won't dictate which contractor you use. Get more than one written quote for the window work.
The homeowners insurance and hail-damaged windows guide covers ACV, deductibles and claim timing in more depth.
What hail window work costs
Hail jobs range from one glass unit to every window on the stormward side.
| Item | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Rapid City, per window (all types) | $200–$1,200; avg ≈ $600 | EcoWatch, Jan 2025 |
| National average, per window | $800 (typical $450–$1,200) | Fixr, Jan 2026 |
| Vinyl / fiberglass / composite / wood (unit) | $350–$800 / $400–$1,500 / $300–$2,500 / $600–$2,000 | Fixr, Jan 2026 |
| Installation labor | $150–$300 per standard window (up to $800 bay/bow) | Fixr, Jan 2026 |
| Foggy glass: new insulated glass unit / glass replacement | $150–$600 / $300–$880 | Fixr, Aug 2025 |
| Whole house | 1-story, 10–15 windows ≈ $8,000–$12,000 · 2-story, 15–30 windows ≈ $12,000–$24,000 | Fixr, Jan 2026 |
Typical published ranges, not quotes (Fixr Jan 2026; EcoWatch Jan 2025; This Old House 2026). Black Hills installers' quotes vary.
Quotes depend on how many openings are damaged, whether frames are sound, access, lead-safe work on pre-1978 homes and insurance scope. For a planning number, try the calculator on the window replacement cost guide.
Repair or replace after hail?
| Situation | Usually reasonable |
|---|---|
| Cracked glass, frame and sash sound | Replace the glass unit only. See window repair and foggy glass |
| Torn screens only | Rescreen or new screen frames; no window work |
| Dented aluminum wrap, window fine | Re-wrap the trim; ask whether the window itself needs anything |
| Split vinyl frame or several broken units on one wall | Replace those windows, often as full units |
| Old, drafty windows that also took damage | A good time to look at vinyl or fiberglass replacements |
When not to replace: if only screens or glass are damaged and the windows are fairly new, a full replacement spends money you don't need to spend. Ask installers to quote both options when the frames look sound.
Storm-chaser red flags
After a big storm, out-of-town crews arrive fast; city officials have warned residents about this in past hail years, according to news reports. Walk away from anyone who:
- Offers to pay, waive or rebate your deductible. That is illegal for residential roofing in South Dakota (SDCL 37-24-50) and a red flag for any trade.
- Promises "free windows" or says insurance will pay for everything.
- Pushes you to sign today, or asks you to sign over your claim or insurance check.
- Wants cash only, or full payment before the work is done.
- Can't show a South Dakota contractor's excise tax license number, proof of insurance or a local address.
Signed at your door? You can still cancel.
Under South Dakota's door-to-door sales law (SDCL 37-24-5.1 and following), you can usually cancel a contract signed at home until midnight of the third business day. The Attorney General advises a written contract, no cash-only deals and no full prepayment. Questions or complaints: SD Consumer Protection, 1-800-300-1986. More warning signs are in storm-chaser contractor red flags.
Questions to ask every installer
- What is your South Dakota contractor's excise tax license number? (Verify with the Department of Revenue at 1-800-829-9188.)
- Can you send proof of insurance, and do you hold a City of Rapid City or Spearfish contractor license where it's required?
- My house was built before 1978. Are you an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm?
- Which windows are hail-damaged, and which are just old? Can you mark that on the quote?
- Is the quote for glass only, insert replacement or full-frame replacement?
South Dakota has no state window-contractor license, and Rapid City Window Pros does not verify licenses or insurance, so these checks are yours to make. If you'd rather talk it through, call (877) 265-2390.
Hail Damage Window FAQ
Does homeowners insurance cover hail-damaged windows?
Many homeowners policies cover sudden hail damage, but what you get depends on your policy: actual cash value or replacement cost, your wind/hail deductible, and what the adjuster finds. Read your declarations page and call your agent. Nobody selling windows can promise what insurance will pay.
Can hail damage window seals without breaking the glass?
It can. A hard impact can stress the seal around a double-pane unit, and the glass may start to fog between the panes weeks or months later. Write down the storm date and photograph the windows soon after, so a later seal failure can be compared with your storm records.
Can a contractor pay my insurance deductible?
No reputable one should offer. South Dakota law makes it illegal for residential roofing contractors to advertise or promise to pay or rebate a deductible (SDCL 37-24-50), and contracts that do are void. Treat the same offer from any window or siding company as a serious red flag.
How long does my insurer have to respond to a hail claim in South Dakota?
State law requires insurers to acknowledge and act on claim communications within 30 days (SDCL 58-33-67). A local agent told KOTA that adjusters often visit within three to seven days after a storm, though big storms can stretch that. Keep notes of every call and email.
