Window Tax Credits and Rebates in South Dakota for 2026: What's Actually Left
Short answer: for replacement windows installed in 2026, there is no federal tax credit, no state rebate and no Black Hills Energy window rebate. Here is the plain version:
- The federal 25C credit ended for windows installed after December 31, 2025.
- South Dakota declined the federal IRA home-energy rebates, the only state to do so.
- Black Hills Energy lists no window rebate among its South Dakota residential rebates.
That matters because some national websites, brochures and sales pitches still talk about windows "qualifying" for a credit. If you are replacing windows in Rapid City or the Black Hills this year or next, plan the budget without any credit or rebate. The rest of this guide explains each point and the honest ways to keep a project affordable.

Is there a federal tax credit for windows in 2026?
No. The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, known as 25C, applied only to qualifying property placed in service through December 31, 2025. For windows and skylights, the credit was capped at $600 for the year, and the windows had to meet specific efficiency criteria. Windows installed on or after January 1, 2026 do not qualify, and there is no replacement federal credit for windows.
"Placed in service" generally means installed, not ordered or paid for. A contract signed or a deposit paid in 2025 does not carry the credit forward to windows installed in 2026.
| Your situation | Federal 25C window credit? |
|---|---|
| Qualifying windows installed in 2023, 2024 or 2025 | Possibly, on that year's return. Ask a tax professional. |
| Contract or deposit in 2025, windows installed in 2026 | Generally no. The install date is what counts. |
| Windows installed in 2026 or later | No. The credit has ended for windows. |

Does South Dakota offer IRA home energy rebates?
No. The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act funded two state-run home energy rebate programs, often called HEAR and HOMES. States had to apply to run them. In August 2024, South Dakota declined the money, roughly $69 million according to news reports, and it is the only state to opt out. So the state-run rebates homeowners in other states may read about are not available here.
Even in states that run them, those programs focus mostly on things like heat pumps, insulation, air sealing and electrical upgrades, and windows were never their main target. For South Dakota homeowners the point is moot: there is no state IRA rebate program to apply to.
Does Black Hills Energy have a window rebate?
Not that we could find. Black Hills Energy's South Dakota residential rebate page lists items such as smart thermostats, air purifiers, dehumidifiers, advanced power strips, heat pump water heaters, heating and cooling equipment and EV chargers. Windows are not on the list. Programs change, so check Black Hills Energy's current South Dakota rebate page before you assume either way.
If anyone tells you a window rebate exists, ask for the program name, a link and the application form. A real program will have all three.

Are new windows still worth it without a tax credit?
Often, yes, if your windows are actually failing. The credit was capped at $600, while a window lasts for decades. Rapid City is in IECC Climate Zone 6A, with about 7,252 heating degree days a year and roughly 174 nights at or below 32°F, so drafty, fogged or single-pane windows cost you comfort for most of the year.
When you compare products, the useful number is on the label. The Black Hills are almost certainly in ENERGY STAR's Northern zone, where qualifying windows need a U-factor of 0.22 or lower; check the label on any window you are quoted. That label tells you about the window's performance. It does not mean a credit or rebate is available. For more on glass choices, see energy-efficient windows and triple pane vs double pane windows.
If your windows are sound and only a little drafty, new weatherstripping and caulk may do more for the money than replacement. A good installer will tell you that.
Honest ways to keep a window project affordable
With no credit or rebate, the savings come from how you scope the job:
- Use fewer styles. Sliders, double-hungs and picture windows in standard sizes usually cost less than a mix of casements, specialty shapes and custom sizes.
- Phase by elevation. Replace the worst side of the house first, often the north wall or the side that faces winter wind, and do the rest later.
- Repair where the frame is sound. A foggy window with a good frame may only need new glass. Fixr puts a new insulated glass unit at $150–$600 (Aug 2025). See foggy window repair vs replace.
- Match the material to the window. Vinyl often makes sense for standard openings; save fiberglass or wood for large or prominent windows.
- Compare written quotes. Two or three line-item quotes show where the money is going. See how to compare window replacement quotes.

Red flags around credit and rebate talk
- A 2026 quote or ad that promises a federal window credit.
- "Sign now before the credit goes away." For windows, it already went away.
- A "utility rebate" or "state program" with no name, link or form.
- "Was $X, now $Y" pricing with no basis. South Dakota's deceptive trade practices law (SDCL 37-24-6) limits price-reduction claims.
- Pressure to sign at the kitchen table. If you sign at home, South Dakota law generally lets you cancel until midnight of the third business day.
When you are ready to price the project honestly, the free quote form takes a few minutes. Independent local window companies reply with quotes, and there is no obligation to hire any of them.
